An epic volume on the history and material culture of the Southern African tribes, focusing mainly on the Bushmen and how they were affected by the Bantu and Hottentot tribes invading their huntining grounds. The Author died before it was ready for publication, but fortunatly the illustrations had been carefully prepared and were reproduced chromolithographically.  Lucy C. Lloyd, considered to be the greatest living authority on Bushmen at the time, realised the importance of the work and purchased it from Mr. Stowes widow in 1904, intending to see it published. She used her considerable network, including Sir Bartle Frere and George McCall Theal to achieve this and the book was published in 1905.  She also added images from her large photographic collection to the work.

1st Edition, with original red cloth binding in very good condition with some restoration to the front board. Internally secure with age toned pages and a few odd spots. Folding map with a few tears and chips. Worming to the head of pages 615 to 618 and rear endpaper, resulting in a small amount of lost text of the index.
