Full size Isihlangu Zulu battle shield showing great age and deep patina. Certainly pre dating the 1879 War, although by how long is not possible to tell  – it could be mid or even early 19c.  The construction is slighty unusual in that it uses wound thong to secure the stick rather than the folded 'V' shapes formed from the hide lacing. Interestingly, certain groups that left Zululand in the 1820s during the Mfecane and migrated North through Mozambique and into Tanzania were seen to use this method in the late 19thc.

A  rare shield that requires further research.

Good antique condition with some hair loss.

Shield alone: 122cm length

Stick is later 19c ball headed staff.

Trade offers allways welcome.
