Late 19th century Artillery Sword made made by W.K.&C Germany for Boer purchase, Etched with the name E.J. Lotteryman. E.J. Lotteryman (Loterijman, Y or IJ can be used) had an importing business and shop in Kerkstraat Oost, Pretoria during the 1880s and 1890s and became a close confidant of Paul Kruger, and was also a Justice of the Peace in Pretoria at this time. With war looking increasingly likely, Mr. Kruger sent Mr Loteryman to Europe to procure arms and equipment for the Boers, and this included a very small number of swords.

The etching 'Dutch Republic Africa' is a mystery, and may be evidence that this particular sword was intended as a 'sample' to procure sales from both the Traansvaal Republic and the O.V.S, although there is evidence that it was also used in the field.

The W.K&C catalog of the 1890s lists this model as no. 556, the 'British Artillery officers' model, and in the Traansvaal (ZAR) these were carried by the State Artillery, Police and Volunteer Corps.

Only a very small number of Boer swords have survived and this example may well be a one of a kind.

In excellent antique condition with signs of use and blackened scabbard, worthy of further research and a unique addition to any Boer War collection.
