A scarce model, the P1879  Sawback was designed for the Martini Henry Artillery Carbine. Intended to funtion as a combination tool, the sawback being capable of clearing bush and tree roots and and blade being long enough to work as a sword if needed. In the short time period that these bayonets where issued they saw very hard use, with most surviving objects looking very worn and are missing their scabbards. This example, with its scabbard, shows wear wear but is in above average condition. One of the handle scales shows a field attempt at chequering which is interesting.  It is sometimes said that the issue of this bayonet marked the militaries turn toward trench warfare.
