Large studded Zulu Knobkerry c1880s, carved with the name 'J. Worby' and the years of the Second Boer War '1899 1900 1901'. On each face of the Knobkerry are carved the names of various battles: 'Langs Nek' (1st BW); 'Tugela Heights' (2nd BW); 'Relief of Ladysmith' (2nd BW) and 'Bergendal' (2nd BW). These battles span nearly Twenty years, suggesting Mr Worby was a lifetime soldier.
Trophys like this have surfaced from both the Zulu and Boer Wars, collected during the soldiers time in South Africa; and later, sometimes after his return to England, inscribed with his achievments. This is a particularly impressive example and would be of interest to both the Zulu and Boer War collector.
The wirework is still in excellent condition, and its very rare to see a knobkerry of this style with all of its studs in place.
