Outstanding 1879 era large Regimental War Shield with two ritual stabbing holes. The importance of these holes cannot be overestimanted – they were produced when the animal was slaughtered and the Zulu believed that it was through these holes that the life force departed. It was believed that these holes endowed the shield with great power and were the most desirable type. Two holes are unusual and are probably intended to make the shield extra powerfull.
