On consignment from a UK collector, this very interesting shield would be worthy of further research.

Attatched to the back are two apparently old labels, one paper and one leather inscribed 'Zululand', 'Ulundi '79'  and 'AmaDolwaneh' (uThulwana Regiment). We believe these labels to be mistaken later additions, as  closer inspection reveals the inscription 'Intombi, March 1879' in Victorian ink on the shield itself. There is a further, illegible inscription in more recent ink on the back of the shield.

The owner informs us that this shield was purchased on an Irish auction over a decade ago as part of a lot called 'Connaught Regiment Tribal Trophies'. The Connaught Regiment (88th of foot) were active in the Anglo-Zulu War although not specifically connected to the Battle at Intombi Drift.

Relics from Ntombi Drift are rare enough and a shield would be something very special, especially considering that only 30 Zulus were thought to have died in the action.

In good condition with most of its hair, signs of use wear.

Length 116cm.

Large 1879 Zulu War Shield, poss. Ntombi Drift Relic.
