Large war shields are scarce. Most officers from the Zulu War brought back smaller and easier to to transport shields, and those that bought back large examples usually disposed of the stick before leaving South Africa. This shield still retains its original stick –  and it's a very nice one– cut and grooved for a Genet fur wrap.

The Ritual Stab Hole is the mark of a genuine, good quality War Shield. The importance of this cannot be over stated, as the Zulu believed that the animals spirit left its body through this hole – and in doing so emparted magical properties to the shield. All War Shields  like this one were property of the State and handed out before battle, the examples with the hole were the most coveted by warriors. Private ownership of these shields was not allowed.

The Shield is in good antique condition with most of its fur. Some small cracks and splits along the edge and some warping as is normal. It can be flattened for £45 if desired, this process takes about 5 -7 days.
