H. Rider Haggard, best known for his novel 'King Solomons Mines', began his career in 1875 as an unpaid assistant to the secretarty to Sir Henry Bulwer, Lieutenant-Governer of Natal. 'Cetywayo and His White Neigbors' was the authors first full-length published work, and was completed in 1882 after his return to England from South Africa.

The 1st Edition was only published in 750 copies after Rider Haggard paid the publishers £50 to do so and he subsequently lost this investment due to poor sales. As later works began to become popular, the public began to take an interest in his account of white settlement in South Afric, The Boer War and the Zulu War, and the work was reprinted into several editions - this being the fourth in 1894 and includes a new introduction.

Rider Haggard was one of those Victorians who had sympathetic leanings towards the Africans and this comes through in most of his works. A scarce title from an eye witness that deserves a place in the the bookshelf of any collector of South African History, and an affordable early edition – the 1882 version sells for well  over £1000.

Binding in excellent firm condition with only a slight crack inside the front board, please see pics.
