The Courier, Friday Evening, November 19, 1819. Complete four page issue in very good condition. The Second page second Column announces the imminent departure of the first emigrant ships Northampton, Chapman, Ocean, West Indian, La Belle Alliance, Weymouth and Nautilus for The Cape of Good Hope.

"EMIGRATION TO THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE

The Northampton is preparing to recieve Mr. Thos. Willson, of Chelsea, and his party. The Chapman is nearly filled by Mr. Baily and those proceeding with him. The Nautilus to recieve Messrs. Scott, Crause, Owen, and Wm. Smith, with their respective parties.

The latter two sail together,  and will be the first ships that depart for the new colony. The Ocean and Northampton the two next. The West Indian and La Belle Alliance, of between 5 and 600 tones, are taken up, and go next. The Weymouth storeship is preparing to take up at Portsmouth."

The difficult voyage was only the start of the hardships for these poor souls, and what followed became the stuff of legend.

Interesting how a minor notice in an evening evening newspaper of 1819 would lead to such monumental events in the history of South Africa, and become one of its foundations.

Very Rare.
